The Sunshine Coast RCMP have recognized a Sechelt man who assisted police with the arrest of a violent criminal.
On Oct. 30, Staff Sgt. Herb Berdahl honoured David Gibson of Sechelt with the Detachment Commander's commendation for coming to the aid of police and assisting with the arrest of a violent offender.
On the morning of Sept. 21, a lone police officer arrived at a domestic assault in progress in the 6000 block of Norwest Bay Road. Upon arriving, the female officer commanded the male suspect to the ground. The suspect became verbally confrontational, challenging the officer to a fight and refusing to obey commands. As the officer attempted to arrest the suspect, he began to resist. Hearing the confrontation and recognizing that the officer required assistance, Gibson attended the scene and assisted the officer in controlling and securing the suspect while the officer conducted the arrest.
"It is gratifying to seea member of our communitycome forward and render assistance to one of our members who was attempting to arrest an aggressive and violent individual," said Berdahl. "Mr. Gibsontook the initiative to step up and involve himself in a potentially dangerous situation without consideration for hisown safety. Thank you, David, for your help in keeping our community safe."
