Sechelt launches logo contest

If you're a resident of Sechelt you could help rebrand the District by winning the Sechelt logo contest.

If you're a resident of Sechelt you could help rebrand the District by winning the Sechelt logo contest.

The District is asking residents to submit their ideas for a new logo and tagline to support council's vision of Sechelt as a "bold and innovative community where people want to live, work and play."

The competition is open to Sechelt residents of any age and there are three cash awards to be won. First prize is $500, as well as special recognition from council for the winning entry. Second place comes with a $250 prize and third place will receive $125.

A panel of judges will select the top three submissions. Panel members have yet to be selected.

"I think it's fair to say we would be looking to local people preferably, of course with the caveat that they can't submit an entry and also be a judge," Sechelt Mayor John Henderson said.

Henderson said you don't have to be a graphic designer to produce a winning logo and tagline. A good sketch is as welcome as a professional PDF file.

"There will inevitably be work on making it effective," Henderson said. "There's bound to be some very technical things to make it consistent across the different mediums."

Residents of Sechelt may submit more than one entry; however, only one prize will be awarded per person.

Designs must be no smaller than six by six inches and no larger than 8.5 by 11 inches and must be produced on standard office weight white paper. Deadline for submissions is by 4 p.m. on Oct. 1, 2012.

The current logo, a circle of yellow S's with the tag line "Naturally Spirited," was selected by the previous council in 2011. It was a process that cost taxpayers $20,000 and now most of the vehicles and signs in the District have been changed accordingly.

Coun. Doug Hockley expressed his displeasure with the logo in February of this year, noting "Naturally Spirited" is a copyrighted tagline.

Hockley also said the design was done by an off-Coast company and that locals should have the chance to help brand their own community.

His idea of a community contest later gained the support of council.
