The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) transportation committee is looking to create a new advisory committee that will provide ideas and advise the board on issues related to alternative transportation.

The committee voted Monday (Jan. 10) to endorse the concept of an alternative transportation committee and will design terms of reference for the group for a later meeting. The new advisory committee would likely be asked to help formulate policies related to cycling, pedestrian travel, wheelchairs and public transportation with the goal of keeping people out of their cars.

The idea came about at the suggestion of the committee's cycling advocate, Martin Prestage.

Recycling traffic

The SCRD transportation committee will write to recycling contractor Direct Disposal with a request to amend the scheduling of recycling pick-up to help avoid conflicts with ferry traffic. The committee discussed the issue of blue bin pick up through Selma Park and Davis Bay where there are no shoulders for recycling trucks to pull on to when collecting recyclables on Monday.

Sunshine Coast emergency program co-ordinator Bill Elsner said he frequently sees drivers making unsafe passes of the trucks on mornings when blue bins are being collected.
