More than 100 Sunshine Coast music students have received financial assistance through Coast Recital Society (CRS) scholarships since 1998. The deadline for the 2008 scholarship awards is March 1 and the CRS is asking classical music students to submit their applications for this annual program. "Every parent and student knows that talent isn't the only requisite for progress in this demanding field. Our scholarships have paid for music lessons, sheet music, instruments and post-secondary school music studies," said CRS artistic director Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright in a news release.
CRS scholarships are open to Sunshine Coast students, 25 years or younger, who are studying classical music. Applicants must complete the application form available from the CRS office or downloaded as a PDF file from the CRS website at www.coastrecitalsociety.ca. The application must include the student's music education and experience, a description of how the scholarship money will be used and an unedited recording by the applicant of at least 10 minutes duration, including at least two works chosen from the following classical music categories: baroque era (1685 to 1750), classical era (1750 to 1820), romantic era (1820 to 1890) and post-romantic (the 20th century). The recording can be on cassette, CD or DVD.Heinsheimer Wain-wright said the CRS scholarship program is an important part of the society's community activities. In addition to this support of Coast music students, the society also presents school performances and master classes by the professional classical musicians who appear in CRS concerts. The society also makes discounted tickets available to students for each concert in the main CRS series at the Raven's Cry Theatre.
Scholarship applications can be mailed to Coast Recital Society, PO Box 1010, Sechelt, B.C., V0N 3A0, or brought to the Coast Recital Society office, located above the Royal Bank, at Suite 209, 5760 Teredo St. by the March 1 deadline.
