RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Oct. 27 to Nov. 3:

Impaired drivers

Late on Oct. 27, police noted a vehicle with no head or tail lights at the intersection of Wharf Road and Highway 101, Sechelt. Police initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle and found the driver already had a pending driving prohibition. The driver – who was exhibiting signs of impairment – advised he’d last consumed alcohol several hours prior to driving. The driver was given a roadside alcohol-screening test with a “warn” result. The driver was served his three-month notice of prohibition from driving, a seven-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded.

• Around 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 2, police were called to a single-vehicle collision on Hwy. 101 near Havies Road in Sechelt, after a woman drove her van into the ditch. The driver, who had three children in her van, admitted to consuming liquor recently, and failed a roadside screening test. The woman was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle has been impounded for 30 days.

Llamas!

• Late on Oct. 27, police responded to a call of three llamas on the loose in Lower Gibsons. The witnesses described the llamas as two brown adults and one brown and white juvenile. Police spotted the three llamas near Gramma’s Liquor Store but lost sight of them and subsequent patrols for the animals were unsuccessful. The owner was located and advised where the llamas were last seen.

Break and enter/thefts

• On the afternoon of Oct. 28, a thief damaged a door latch with a pair of pliers and gained entry to a residence in the 8000 block of Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay. The thief stole a power generator, a hunting bow, and a silver chain, but later anonymously returned the generator and bow. The file is still under investigation.

• Sometime between December 2014 and February 2015, a thief stole a large bronze sculpture from a property in the 4600 block of Gerrans Bay Road, Madeira Park. The sculpture is described as a 30-pound, metre-tall bronze peacock. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 15-7590.

• Overnight on Oct. 31, a thief gained access to numerous vehicles – including an ambulance – parked in the 1700 block of Field Road and the 4300 block of Gun Club Road, and stole a wide variety of items. While a number of items were recovered nearby, other items are still outstanding. Anyone with information about these thefts is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 15-7632.

Collision

• On Oct. 29, police attended a two-vehicle incident at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Mermaid Street, Sechelt, after the first vehicle attempted to make a left turn onto Ocean Avenue and the second vehicle came through the intersection and struck the first vehicle on the rear driver’s side. No injuries were reported and neither vehicle needed to be towed. The driver of the second vehicle was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield after a stop and the matter has been referred to ICBC.

Scams

All of these letters, which often request the recipient keep the information within confidential, mention either wealthy long-lost deceased relatives or government officials who wish to share large sums of money with the recipient. The letter usually requests some kind of assistance in order to get the funds to the recipient or request the recipient contact the sender for more information. All of these types of letters are scams. See sites such as www.bbb.org or www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca to learn more.
