Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Oct. 20 to 27:
Weapon
Police were called in the early morning hours of Oct. 24 after a resident was awoken by a male yelling outside his residence. When the resident refused to go outside or speak with the suspect, the suspect returned, allegedly waving a machete. RCMP located the suspect nearby and arrested him without incident. The machete was also located and seized. Police have recommended multiple charges, including breaching a recognizance of bail he was already on, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The resident and the suspect are known to each other; however, it is unknown what provoked the incident.
Impaired drivers
• On Oct. 20, police witnessed a vehicle speeding on Highway 101 near Pratt Road, Gibsons. Police initiated a traffic stop and noted the odour of alcohol coming from the driver. The driver, who admitted consuming alcohol several hours prior, was given a roadside alcohol-screening test. Based on the result, the driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition as well as a violation ticket for speeding.
• On Oct. 23, an impaired driver was reported on the Langdale ferry. Police initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle after it disembarked and noted the driver exhibiting strong signs of impairment. The driver was given and failed two roadside alcohol-screening tests. Due to prior driving history, the driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and issued a promise to appear for court, a 24-hour driving suspension and an administrative driving prohibition. The file is still under investigation.
• On Oct. 24, police attended a single-vehicle rollover incident on Lower Road at Largo Road, Roberts Creek. The uninjured driver advised he’d consumed a couple of alcohol beverages shortly before driving. The driver provided two breath samples, which registered more than double the legal limit. The driver was issued a promise to appear for court and issued an administrative driving prohibition and a 24-hour driving prohibition. The file is still under investigation.
• Late on Oct. 25, police conducted a traffic stop with a possible impaired driver on Highway 101 at Wharf Road, Sechelt. The driver, who was already a prohibited driver, was exhibiting signs of intoxication, and advised he’d consumed alcohol shortly before driving. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol-screening test and, due to prior driving history, arrested for impaired driving. The driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition, an administrative driving prohibition, a notice of impoundment, a violation ticket for no insurance and a promise to appear for court. The file is still under investigation.
Mischief
• On Oct. 25, a vandal punctured tires on a vehicle parked in the 200 block of Pratt Road, Gibsons, as well as covered one side of the vehicle with some kind of oil. No other damage was reported.
• On Oct. 24, a vandal damaged a BC Hydro transformer box on Linwood Road, Roberts Creek. It appears that the vandal shot the transformer box, causing it to leak a large volume of oil onto the ground. Anyone with any information about this mischief is asked to contact RCMP, reference 15-7533.
Theft from vehicles
• Overnight on Oct. 19, a thief smashed a window to gain access to a locked vehicle in the 4300 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, and stole a tablet charger, Sony headphones and a Chevron fuel card.
• Overnight on Oct. 21, a vandal smashed out a window of a vehicle parked in the 5800 block of Sechelt Inlet Road. No other damage was reported and nothing was stolen.
Traffic
• On Oct. 23, police attended a two-vehicle incident at the intersection of Wharf Avenue and Highway 101, Sechelt, after the first vehicle turned left on a green light and was struck by a second oncoming vehicle. No life-threatening injuries were reported but one of the drivers was taken to hospital for assessment. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. A driver’s licence review has been requested for the driver of the first vehicle.
• On Oct. 26, a witness reported an “N” vehicle with five passengers driving on Gibsons Way. Police located the vehicle on Reed Road, Gibsons and spoke with the young driver who had five teenaged passengers along for the ride. The driver was issued a violation ticket for driving contrary to restrictions and four of the passengers were obliged to walk home.
