Sunshine Coast RCMP and Sechelt firefighters teamed up on a number of calls last weekend that thankfully resulted in only minor injuries.

On Saturday morning around 11 a.m., police responded to a three-car collision on Highway 101 and Davis Bay Road. Three people were taken to St. Mary's Hospital by paramedics for treatment of minor injuries. The Sechelt fire department attended and assisted with traffic control.

According to Const. Glen Martin, a Good Samaritan also assisted with traffic control. Following the police investigation, charges of following too closely were laid against one of the drivers, a Sunshine Coast resident.

Police then assisted firefighters with a car fire on Highway 101 in Selma Park that occurred at approximately the same time as the collision in Davis Bay. The cause of the fire appears to be mechanical problems.

While police and fire crews were trying to catch their collective breath, another call came in just before noon of a kite surfer in distress in Davis Bay.

"The kite surfer appeared to be in trouble a few hundred metres off shore," Martin said. "Halfmoon Bay Auxiliary Coast Guard and the hovercraft were dispatched to assist. Two members of the fire department rowed out to the kite surfer and brought him to shore. The uninjured man was from the Lower Mainland and was grateful for assistance.

"Sunshine Coast RCMP would like to thank the public and the fire department for their assistance," Martin said.
