Not all SCRD facilities or activities require proof of vaccination

Some programs remain open to all

The public health order regarding proof of vaccination came into effect on Monday, Sept. 13.

As businesses, facilities and their patrons were learning what does and does not require proof of vaccination, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) issued a press release on Sept. 14 to clarify how the order would affect facilities and recreation.

The requirement of showing proof of vaccination is based on participant age and which activity they are taking part in.

The vaccine card check is required for all adults older than 21 who are participating in physical activities. This includes the weight room, fitness classes, courts and adult sports in the arena.

All events, programs or activities with more than 50 participants require proof of vaccination.

More activities may qualify for vaccination confirmation, depending on more information as it is released by the public health officer.

But not all offerings at SCRD facilities are limited to users who can prove they’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Swimming pools, aquafit programs, public skates, and the Happy Hearts Plus Cardiac Rehabilitation Program remain open to all.

Proof of vaccination is not required for youth under 22 years old, or parents dropping their children off or aiding in a specific program.

“Failure to produce a vaccine card ... and I.D. for activities requiring a vaccine card check will result in staff refusing access,” the SCRD’s statement said.

More information on vaccine cards can be found at www2.gov.bc.ca/vaccinecard.html.

Recreation staff do not have a say in the order, nor how it is implemented, the SCRD reiterated.

Staff have been instructed to cease any conversation that becomes disrespectful or abusive.
