Wyatt Henley has been named the new School District No. 46 (SD46) student trustee for the 2015-16 school year.
Wyatt is 17 years old in Grade 12 at Elphinstone Secondary School and he’s “excited” about his new position at the board table.
He’s already spent two years as a member of the District Student Leadership Team (DSLT), which brings together representatives from high schools across the Sunshine Coast to talk about issues of common concern. The student trustee is chosen from among the members of the DSLT.
After being sworn in during the regular school board meeting on Oct. 13, Wyatt let his fellow trustees know what’s been discussed by students on the leadership team so far this year.
“Student mental health has been a real priority for the DSLT, and with the final copy of the strategic plan that [superintendent of schools Patrick Bocking] brought to us, we looked at how we can tie in that priority to actual change the school district is trying to do,” Wyatt said.
He also noted that students want to gain more financial understanding in their final years of math in SD46.
“Financial literacy as a form of mathematics is also really important to mostly senior students graduating. Integrating more financial literacy into the planning of courses and that sort of thing,” Wyatt said.
He noted it was great to see students taking an interest in mental health particularly, and said students at Elphinstone have already talked with their principal about hosting a health and wellness conference at the high school in the future.
“It’s cool to see things in motion,” he added.
