The Music Makers adult choir is sponsoring a gospel workshop on the Sunshine Coast May 14 to 15 at St. John's United Church.

Last year a group of people from the choir travelled to Vancouver to attend a similar workshop and had such a wonderful time that the Music Makers wanted to bring the experience to the Coast so everyone could enjoy it.

"I have to admit I was somewhat reluctant about going Vancouver for a gospel workshop, because I am not a religious person and haven't been particularly moved by church singing in the past," said Dena Nicholby, who attended the workshop last year. "But the opportunity to spend a weekend away with girlfriends convinced me to go along for the ride. Much to my absolute amazement, I was immediately excited to be there, girlishly delighted to meet the workshop leaders - and from the moment we began to learn and sing the gospel music, my soul was deeply affected. I can't explain why my emotions were so close to the surface, why some songs moved me to tears and why my heart soared, but it did."

"With a beautifully bright singing environment and a group of 100-plus singers who likely now shared my sentiment, I sang like I've never sung before, full of promise, full of love and full of joy. This is the excitement I now want to share with the Sunshine Coast."

On Sunday, May 14, at 3 p.m. at St. John's, there will be a concert to conclude the workshop. This concert is open to the public and is a great chance to hear the music that workshop participants have created. Tickets are $12 and are available at Talewind Books or through Music Makers choir members.
