Al Mulholland – a man well known on the Sunshine Coast for his decade of work with Community Futures, his Rotary volunteerism and his trademark laugh – passed away Nov. 8 at Sechelt Hospital. He was 65.

“Anybody who knew Al knew he’d be there if you needed something emceed or helped with, or you name it,” Colleen Clark, executive director with the Sechelt and District Chamber of Commerce, said during a breakfast meeting with Chamber members on Nov. 9.

“Al has been a huge proponent in the community for development and a huge Chamber supporter and just an all around wonderful human being. Unfortunately he had been ill for a little while and yesterday suffered a heart attack and passed away.”

Mulholland was executive director with Community Futures Sunshine Coast from 2000 to 2010 when he left the role to take a top civil servant position in Kimberly.

At the time, he confessed it was hard to leave but noted the chance to become chief administrative officer of Kimberly was a “great career opportunity.”

When it was time to retire, the Coast called Mulholland back, and in 2014 he returned.

In his 65 years, Mulholland amassed an impressive resume, holding an array of executive management and senior government positions. On the Coast he was instrumental in some of the most significant projects and business developments created between 2000 and 2010. Even so, it’s his spirit of service displayed through his work with Rotary, his big personality and his infectious, engaging laugh that most will remember him for.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club on Monday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

His family asks that expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers be sent to the Rotary Canada Foundation.
