A motorcyclist has died after being found at the side of Highway 101 in Halfmoon Bay the Saturday of the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Though it is unclear what happened, the single-vehicle collision involved a beige 2013 Piaggio Motorcycle travelling eastbound on the highway, when it veered off the road. Sunshine Coast RCMP got the call from paramedics shortly before noon Oct. 8, said Cst. Karen Whitby of Sunshine Coast RCMP. “He was laying on the shoulder of the road,” said Whitby. The road was dry, daytime visibility good, there wasn’t any other vehicle debris and the motorcycle didn’t appear to have struck any other vehicle, according to Whitby. There were also no tire skid marks.

There were no other vehicles or passengers and no witnesses.

The 67-year-old man was taken to hospital but died about eight hours later, according to Whitby. She said she believes he’s from West Vancouver but has property up in Garden Bay.

The RCMP is still looking for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage who was driving the stretch of highway between Iska Road and Donley Drive around the time of the incident, which was called in at 11:46 a.m. The man was found at the 11000 block of Highway 101.

Anyone with information is asked contact the RCMP at 604-885-2266.
