Effective Monday, Oct. 20, and for the remainder of 2008, the Sechelt Public Library will be open Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This trial extension of library hours will cost approximately $8,000 and is being funded by the District of Sechelt.
"The Sechelt Public Library Board is pleased to be able to provide additional hours of service for the public," said library board chair Robert Paulin.Paulin said it was decided to open on Mondays after analyzing the results of the public's responses to the June questionnaire. The board is also aware that many people make visits to the building and surrounding services and businesses on Mondays and feels that having the library open on Mondays will be a convenience for the public. Paulin also expressed thanks on behalf of the board for the support from the District.
Chief librarian Iris Loewen said library staff will track the number of items borrowed and the number of library visits made to the library on Mondays. These statistics will be analyzed and used to determine if six day per week openings should be continued as part of future operating budgets. The library's operating budget is funded from a Sunshine Coast Regional District function, with contributions from the District of Sechelt, Halfmoon Bay, Pender Harbour, Roberts Creek and the Sechelt Indian Government District.
