Students at Pender Harbour Secondary School are getting an additional day off after the school was closed Tuesday morning due to a transformer fire.

According to School District No. 46, a large transformer outside of the school caught fire while students were in class.

Basically a transformer outside the school had some smoke coming out of it and obviously that's a concern. It's not attached to the school, so the building wasn't in jeopardy, but the power did need to be shut off for safety, superintendent of schools Patrick Bocking said.

Due to the loss of power, plumbing capabilities and heat the school was closed and students were bussed home after parents were notified.

BC Hydro was called to deal with the transformer but Bocking said he was unsure when power would be restored to the school.

We don't have timelines yet. It has to do with whether or not they can repair it or whether they need to replace it, Bocking said.

He noted there is a small chance the school may need to be closed again tomorrow (Nov. 13) but noted parents would be notified via phone message if that's the case.
