Here's what happening on Canada Day in Sechelt

Happy Birthday, Canada! Friday, July 1 marks 155 years since Canada’s confederation, and the last day of the first syíyaya Days in Sechelt. So pack your sunscreen and your smile for fun events in downtown Sechelt.

Traffic and parking changes

Be aware that there will be traffic pattern and parking changes starting early in the morning through to 1:30 p.m. Affected area are between Ocean and Trail Avenues along Cowrie, Mermaid, Spindrift, Medusa and Dolphin Streets. Walking, cycling, taking transit or car-pooling are all great options to get to the action with fewer hassles.

Events scheduled

Beginning at 8 a.m., is a Lion’s Club pancake breakfast on Cowrie Street. Starting at the same time and continuing for two hours at the Trail Bay Mall, youngsters can decorate their bicycles in preparation for taking part in the ever-popular parade. Music along Cowrie starts at 9 a.m. with a performance by the Suncoast Concert Band.

At 10 a.m. the Orange Shirt walk (register at Sechelt.ca/syiyaya) will proceed in front of the annual Canada Day Parade. Those events get assembled in the area around the Sechelt Library on Cowrie, then wind through the downtown. Watch for parade route markings to find a space to view this much loved-event.

The grand opening of the recently completed Hackett Park stage (located near the corner of Trail and Medusa) is set for noon, with entertainment including music and dance group performances running through to 3 p.m. Lots of viewing area within the park and the new natural amphitheatre. Bring your own seats, water and snacks, and remember to carry out everything you carry in.

Throughout Hackett Park, there will be a plethora of activities to enjoy from noon to 3 p.m. Scheduled to be part are pony rides, a bouncy castle, face painting, food venders and the ever-popular dunk tank with a range of volunteers taking a turn at being “dunk target." 

At the nearby Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (5714 Medusa), a free weaving cedar hearts workshop will be presented by Ali and Bella Casey between noon and 3 p.m.

Throughout the day, the tems swiya Museum (5555 Sunshine Coast Hwy) will be open, featuring shíshálh heritage and cultural displays.
