The suspicious fire total now stands at 18.

The latest suspected arson took place in Gibsons on Thursday night, July 31, when Gibsons firefighters and Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to a structure fire in the 600 block of Seaview Lane just after 11 p.m.

When emergency crews arrived on scene, a detached carport with a vehicle inside was engulfed in flames.

"It was fully involved - lots of flames and lots of sparks," said Gibsons Fire Chief Bob Stevens. "Once we got a hose on it, it took only a few minutes to get the fire out, but the carport and the vehicle were destroyed."

Sgt. Stuart Falebrinza said a scene examination is leading investigators to believe this was arson.

"The Sunshine Coast RCMP are currently investigating the numerous fires on the Sunshine Coast that are suspicious in nature. At this time it is unknown if the fires are linked," said Falebrinza.

As of April, RCMP are now investigating 18 fires that they believe to be suspicious in nature. Police are still seeking two persons of interest believed to have information about some of the more recent fires. As of Tuesday, Falebrinza said RCMP are still investigating and have no new information to report.

Police are still seeking public assistance to try to solve these suspected arsons. The public can call police at 604-885-2266 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) with any information.
