The inaugural Black Boot charity event fundraiser for cancer patients on the Coast will be held at 7 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the Sechelt Legion.
Co-founder Craig Moore said the philosophy behind the event is to make the lives of cancer patients a little easier while they cope with their diagnosis.
“Once you’ve been diagnosed, your life changes,” Moore said. “I know there are people in this community who are suffering and they don’t have a disability plan, so they’re dealing with it on their own.”
Moore said that when he found out he had cancer it was difficult for him to get through his day-to-day functions as well as work, while at the same dealing with his diagnosis and cancer treatment.
“I was out of commission for about a month, but then I had to get back into the trenches and start making money right away,” Moore said. “So I think the philosophy is really simple: It’s just to raise money in this community and make sure the money goes directly back into the community.”
Moore came up with the idea for the event with his friend Barry Krangle while they were both working the bar at the Ruby Slipper fundraiser, which is geared more towards women with cancer. Moore said they wanted to do an event that focuses more on men.
Two bands will entertain at the event: Gary Comeau and the Voodoo All Stars, and Blue Line Trio.
Sita’s Spag and Suds, the Old Boot, and Smitty’s Oyster House will provide food, included in the ticket price. There will be a silent auction, and although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, Moore is hoping to organize a snooker tournament.
There will also be a safe ride shuttle service to get people home safely, although that will not be included in the ticket price.
Tickets are $40 and are available at Gaia’s Fair Trade, the Roberts Creek General Store, Lucy’s, the Daily Roast and Welcome Woods Market.
They’ve sold about 50 tickets so far; Moore’s goal is to sell more than 200.
