A joy ride that ripped up the field at Halfmoon Bay Elementary School on March 28 resulted in the need to reseed at a cost of nearly $1,000. An inspection of the field by School District No. 46 (SD46) maintenance staff showed no damage to the underground irrigation system.
“Our maintenance staff has repaired the field including seeding, but it will take some time for the grass to grow back in,” said Patrick Bocking, SD46 superintendent of schools, noting he was thankful “the vehicle missed the irrigation system, so the cost of repairing that expensive system will not be an issue.”
He was unable to say whether SD46 would be pressing charges against the vandal who caused the damage, noting it was a “legal issue.”
Students will now have to stay off the field while the seed takes root, which could mean no more field time this year.
“We will need to keep our students off the seeded areas of the field for the next couple of months to give time for the grass to grow back,” Bocking noted.
