Father of man killed in Peru holding memorial fundraiser for legal funds

Camden Verlaan would have been 22 on Feb. 2, the same day as the fundraiser at 101 Brewhouse & Distillery.

Camden Verlaan of Roberts Creek, BC, died on March 8, 2023, in Peru.

On what would have been a Roberts Creek man's 22nd birthday, his father is holding a memorial and fundraiser in Gibsons in hopes of keeping the fight for accountability in his death going.

In March 2023, 20-year-old Camden Verlaan was walking back to his apartment in Huanchaco, Peru, after surfing during what should have been the trip of a lifetime, when he stepped on a waterfront walkway and was electrocuted.

His father, Vince Verlaan, says a technical study, photos and videos show no wire that Camden stepped on or that could be seen or stepped over. Vince says the workers either allowed a live current to travel down a post or the wires they were using for the upgrade ran into the ground, which entered the sidewalk where Camden was walking.

Vince has exhausted his own resources and is unable to fully fund a legal fight for justice much longer, says a GoFundMe raising money for legal proceedings.

Locally, there's a fundraiser on Feb. 2, what would have been Camden's 22nd birthday, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at 101 Brewhouse & Distillery, which includes a silent auction and tributes to Cam. The $30 tickets include a beer and burger.

"Get your ticket by donating $30 to the GoFundMe and adding 'ticket' to your name. We will have your name on the doorlist. Only 50 tix available due to space," explains the event poster.
