Two wildfires in the past week, have raised concerns about safety for homes and people in downtown Sechelt.
The District of Sechelt released a statement Wednesday, July 30, to say it is working closely with Sechelt Fire Department, RCMP and other organizations to reduce risks of fire.
A July 28 fire took place at night, in the exact same grassy area beside a townhome complex on Ebbtide Street, where a previous fire took place July 23, and which was deemed intentionally set.
The statement notes the preventative measures taking place include speaking with the nearby unhoused residents on Hightide Avenue and helping to remove flammable items such as wood and propane, directing a private security company to increase patrols around the unhoused encampment and vacant private property next to it, installing “Fire Ban” signage along the fence of the vacant private property, and scheduling fire-extinguisher training with residents of the encampment and RainCity Housing.
“The safety of all residents is paramount and the district is doing everything we can within our jurisdiction to help people feel safe within their homes and neighbourhoods,” the statement continues.
For non-emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact the RCMP non-emergency line via online form or call 604-885-2266. The district’s community safety email is [email protected]. For any emergency, smoke or fire detection or imminent danger, please contact 911.
