Dakota Ridge operator reminds drivers to use chains following ‘fender benders’ on icy road

Snowpack ‘above average’ at recreation site

Dakota Ridge received above average snowfall so far this season.

Snow has wafted onto Dakota Ridge outside Sechelt and while it’s been a boon for opening weekend, it’s also triggered crashes on the notoriously icy road leading to the winter recreation area.

A warning was issued via social media on Monday, advised people of “extremely icy” driving conditions along the 14-kilometre stretch of Forest Service Road that climbs up to the expansive plateau, which is managed by the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD).

“Many vehicles are in the ditch, even ones with chains are sliding coming down the hill. There have also been fender benders. Please do not go up the hill today,” said the post.

In an email to Coast Reporter, communications manager Aidan Buckley said the SCRD doesn’t have details about the incidents and recommended people check for road condition updates by visiting the Dakota Ridge page on the SCRD website. “Chains and 4x4 vehicles are recommended for travel on the road to Dakota Ridge,” said the email.

‘Above average’ snowpack

Those who have made it to the ski and snowshoe area, which opened as predicted on Dec. 15, have been treated to  “above average snowpack for this time of year,” according to Buckley. Accumulation has reached a total of 115 centimetres, including 15 cm added overnight Monday, into Tuesday.

While the SCRD didn’t supply opening weekend attendance figures, “it was better than average seasonal opening conditions which was reflected in the number of people who made their way to Dakota Ridge,” said Buckley.

"Staff and volunteers have been working diligently over the past few months and are ahead of schedule for the season. We look forward to welcoming our community to the winter wonderland of Dakota Ridge."

Programming has also been “oversubscribed” for the season, Buckley said.

The Tetrahedron Outdoor Club runs skills development for youth and at 108 skiers, registration is full, according to its website. The 2023 season marks the fifth consecutive year with a waitlist.

Buckley said volunteers are also always welcome. Last month, a volunteer information session was cancelled due to “a lack of response,” according to a social media post.
