Charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public have been laid against a Coquitlam man following an incident in Sechelt last weekend.

Shortly before 5 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to a stabbing call in Sechelt. According to police, the victim, visiting the area from the Lower Mainland, sustained a major injury to his jaw following a verbal altercation.

Police said the victim was quickly airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital where he was treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

According to Const. Spencer Mylymok, the suspect, identified as Matthew Milando, 25, of Coquitlam fled the scene prior to police attending, but was soon tracked down by Mounties in Gibsons where he was arrested without incident.

Milando appeared in Sechelt provincial court on Monday where he was formally charged. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 10. The victim has been released from hospital.
