Volunteers along the Coast will join a nation-wide program to clean up beaches this month.

The planned cleanups will be at Bonniebrook, Roberts Creek, Sargeant Bay, Sechelt Inlet and Trail Bay. Volunteers will collect pollutants and debris from the beaches, which will then go to the Vancouver Aquarium to tally how much garbage volunteers collected, according to the sponsoring TD Canada Trust press release.

The Sunshine Coast Young Naturalist Club is running the Bonniebrook Beach cleanup Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To join, email [email protected] or call 604-886-1910. In Roberts Creek between Pine Street and Henderson Road, volunteers can go either Sept. 17 or 18, from noon to 4 p.m. Contact Katharine Trueman at 604-885-2282 to sign up.

The Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society is organizing the Garden Bay cleanup Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. Call 604-741-7639 or 604-883-9893 or visit www.lagoonsociety.com for more information.

As well, volunteers in Sechelt Inlet will be out at 1 p.m. Sept. 14 and in Trail Bay at 10 a.m. the same day, (now closed to new volunteers), according to the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup website.

Last year, volunteers picked up 126,566 cigarette butts from beaches across the country, the release says. They also found discarded fishing nets, food packaging, bottles and clothing. The program is part of the International Coastal Cleanup. For more information, visit www.vanaqua.org/cleanup.
