On Saturday, Nov. 26, two teams will represent the Sunshine Coast at the third annual First Lego League tournament in North Vancouver.

First Lego League is an international youth robotics competition designed to foster teamwork and creativity while solving real-world engineering problems. This year the theme is Ocean Odyssey.

The Roberts Creek Xtreme Robotic Minds team has been working hard to build and program a Lego robot to solve tasks such as freeing a dolphin from a net, deploying a submarine and cleaning up a cargo spill. They have also completed a research project about deep sea mining of manganese nodules.

The Great White Sharks are participating in Junior First Lego League. At this level, the task is to investigate the wonderful creatures found in our oceans and design new creatures that might be discovered someday.

In preparation for the tournament, both teams recently travelled to the University of British Columbia (UBC) where they presented their research to oceanographers at the UBC Earth and Ocean Sciences Department and received very encouraging feedback.

Spectators are welcome, so please come cheer on our teams at Carson Graham Secondary School, North Vancouver, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
