The Terry Fox Run is celebrating its 25th year running for cancer research. On Sept 18, participants will run, walk, jog or bike in the three, five and 10 km events in Roberts Creek and Gibsons. Through donations and pledges, participants can raise money to carry on Fox's legacy of fighting cancer.
The run in Gibsons starts from Cross Trainers Health and Fitness Club at 10 a.m. for competitors and non-competitors. Roberts Creek Elementary School is also hosting the run at 10 a.m. Registration for both opens at 9:30 a.m. Those not competing can start anytime between 10 and 3 p.m. at the school. Participants can pick up pledge forms at Trail Bay Source for Sports, Pastimes, Sears in Sechelt, Pharmasave, Strait Coffee, Shoppers Drug Mart, the Medicine Shoppe or Cross Trainers. Last year the Coast raised $2,000, according to a press release.
In 1980, Fox began his cross-Canada run with an artificial leg. The journey, which the Canadian Cancer Society supported, started April 12 in Newfoundland. His run ended Sept. 1 outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, when his cancer spread and he had to get treatment. Fox passed away at the age of 22.Since then, a world-wide fundraising run has continued, with funds totalling $360 million for cancer research.
Last year, Canadians voted for Fox as the second greatest Canadian in a CBC poll for its miniseries, The Greatest Canadian. This Sunday, CTV will air the movie Terry, one week before the run.
