The Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club is planning an evening under the stars.
On Saturday, Aug. 13, the club will stage the inaugural Astronomy in the Park event.
With the support and assistance of the Provincial Park Authority and the Sunshine Coast Regional District, the venue for the event will be Porpoise Bay Provincial Park.
Approximately 35 pieces of viewing equipment will be trucked in including large telescopes in the 10-inch or 12-inch range. The event will start at 3 p.m., is completely free and will run until well after dark.
Highlights of the event include: kids astronomy crafts, solar viewing to study the sun through special filtered telescopes, night viewing and a chance to view the moon and far-off galaxies, a multi-media show in the amphitheatre set to music and all day mini seminars with experienced stargazers.
Visitors have registered from as far away as Mount Vernon Wash. and the Fraser Valley, according to club president Bill Clark.
