2963 Seaforth Highlanders: Cadets celebrate 40th anniversary

On Saturday, Jan. 12, the 2963 Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps celebrated their 40th anniversary with a ceremony at the Municipal Hall of the District of Sechelt followed by a parade to the Royal Canadian Legion Sechelt Branch #140 where they held a reception.

Among those in attendance at the ceremony were Sechelt Mayor Darnelda Siegers, MLA Nicholas Simons, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Ed Haverstock, Capt. (retired) Shirley Lewis, RCMP Staff Sgt. Poppy Hallam, Capt. Derrick Gee (Regional Cadet Support Unit), Cathy Bach from the Army Cadet League of Canada, and Janice Lavric, president of the Sunshine Coast Army Cadet Support Association.

The cadets were joined on parade by members of the Seaforth Highlanders Pipes & Drums, and cadets from 72nd Seaforth Highlanders Army Cadets from Vancouver, as well as cadets from 2781 Powell River Cadets.

Army cadets is open to all boys and girls aged 12 to 18. Activities are also focused on adventure training and leadership, and cadets have the opportunity to attend summer camps from two to seven weeks. Parade nights are from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at the 2963 training property on Field Road in Wilson Creek, with weekend activities throughout the training year.
