Women: Beyond the Status Quo

International Women’s Day
SCCS

The Sunshine Coast Community Services’ Together Against Violence (TAV) programs are hosting an International Women’s Day event March 6.

“Beyond the ‘Status Quo’: Women on the Coast” will feature a screening of parts of the film Status Quo highlighting a range of women’s stories, challenges and triumphs. The event will also include local speakers who will talk about how these challenges are being addressed on the Coast and how we can continue to support issues impacting women.

“The #metoo and #timesup movements highlight that women are still discriminated against, victims of abuse and struggling to make the same wages as men. These issues are global issues, and the Sunshine Coast faces the same challenges in gender equality,” Together Against Violence manager Denise Woodley, said. “International Women’s Day gives us a chance to acknowledge the challenges and also celebrate the accomplishments of women.”

Together Against Violence programs support people whose lives have been impacted by violence and trauma. Programs provide crisis intervention, shelter, counselling, advocacy and non-judgmental emotional and practical support. Some of the Together Against Violence Programs include Yew Transition House, Police Based Victim Services and Women’s Outreach.

In 2016, TAV programs supported 478 women impacted by violence on the Sunshine Coast. Seventeen women and children were provided safe housing, counselling, advocacy and support.

“Beyond the ‘Status Quo’: Women on the Coast” will be held on March 6, at Chatelech Secondary School. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the event starts at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
