Armchair Travel and Pruning

Daniel Mosquin (left) and Cheryl Topping will present workshops at the Botanical Garden in January.

Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden has two winter programs this month for enjoyment and learning. Whether you fancy a visit to the Rockies with UBC Botanical Garden’s finest nature photographer, Daniel Mosquin, Saturday, Jan. 14, 4 p.m., or learn to prune shrubs and trees with local arborist Cheryl Topping on Saturday or Sunday, Jan. 28/29, there are fine opportunities for those of us not travelling south.

Mosquin, a botanist, shines at field photography, gathering perfect images of flora and habitat, telling a story that is brilliant and touching. Participate in his curiosity to understand life in the Rockies in his Impressions of the Rockies talk.

This event is $15 for Botanical Garden members, $20 for non-members, with memberships available at the door.

Topping is a great teacher, especially explaining the whys and hows of pruning. She will boost your confidence with tools and techniques. The Saturday session at 1 p.m. at the Garden is by donation.

The Sunday session will be at a private orchard in Roberts Creek, and requires registration and prepayment, $15 for members, $20 for non-members. Space is very limited, so book your spot early.

Sunshine Coast Botan-ical Garden is at 5941 Mason Rd. in West Sechelt, with winter hours 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Monday. Membership is inexpensive, and includes unlimited visits each year, early notice of events, and discounts for some events and at select nurseries. Visit www.coastbotanicalgarden.org for details.
