I would like to draw your attention to the fact that many communities, and ours in particular, are what they are because of the efforts of the often unsung heroes that work to create something out of nothing. This past week our federal representative bestowed honours upon some of those from the Sunshine Coast who make a difference, and a Roberts Creek hero without a cape, Graham Walker, was recognized for his work pulling Slow Sundays out of his hat. As music coordinator, sound technician and emcee, he brings his energy to the community and through music and games, he brightens our home. Congrats Graham!
Peggy, the (volunteer) secretary of the Roberts Creek Library has informed me of changes to the library hours. Closed on Sunday, Monday and Friday, our community association-operated (volunteer-run) little book lender also has a new Facebook page.
Open hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 2-6, Thursday 2-4 and Saturday 10-2.
I found this gem on our “Roberts Creek Speaks” Facebook page: “A big shout out to Ron and Bonnie who spent several days picking up the garbage up and down Roberts Creek Road. Thanks so much for your community spirit! We are lucky to have you as neighbours!”
From the elementary school parents’ advisory council and our unpaid, yet professional firefighters, to the behind the scene workers that create events at the Legion and the Hall, these folks are the glue that hold our community together and deserve our greatest thanks.
We are in this for the long haul and will need to double down to make it through safely but with the precautions we have come to live with (temporally I hope), there are still some things to do/see/support in the Gumboot Nation.
The beautiful and Zen work of local potter Beth Hawthorn is on display at her open studio sale, Saturday and Sunday, Feb 6 & 7 from 11-4 (bethhawthorn.com; 778-893-8304).
With the end of January we are back to having two Wednesday markets – the Masonic Hall Farm Gate Market, brought to you by the Sunshine Coast Ecological Farmers Market Society from 1:30-6 ([email protected]), and the return of the Roberts Creek Community Market at the Hall, 1:30 till 5:30!
I was musing to myself on what the landscape of live performance might look like in the (not too distant we hope) future. With the removal of the ability to witness the great talents, honed by hundreds, if not thousands of hours of practice for our personal entertainment, perhaps the newfound appreciation we have for that which is gone will translate into a willingness to support these performers where it really counts, with a renewed enthusiasm to pay a fair ticket price and get out to enjoy a show among our friends. We cannot take our time here for granted, nor the gifts offered by those who have them to share.
