On Saturday, June 1, join Dr. Brenda Trenholme at Roberts Creek Hall to learn about her journey of a lifetime following the legendary Silk Road from Beijing to Istanbul by bicycle.

One year ago, the retired doctor from Rossland together with 13 other riders embarked on a five-month cycling tour that took them through 10 countries and covered 13,000 kilometres. Now Trenholme is on another bike trip, this time through southern B.C., visiting over 20 communities, to share her fascinating story.

Through personal anecdotes, photos and maps, Trenholme will highlight the varied geography and cultures of the ancient caravan route linking central China with the eastern Mediterranean, which took its name from the silk that was a major source of trade for many centuries. She will describe the breathtaking natural beauty and remote landscapes of the Gobi Desert, western Siberia, and the Pamir Mountains.

The group faced incessant 40 km winds for an entire month in Siberia and bone-jarringly rough terrain to reach the (literal) peak of the tour – the Tibetan Plateau at 15,000 feet, known as the Roof of the World. Trenholme describes the journey as “the ultimate challenge” of her life.

The presentation is at 7 p.m. Admission will be by donation to the Kenya Education Endowment Fund. KEEF is a small registered B.C.-based charity that makes secondary education possible for a number of African children.
