As you read this story, some of you will have recently watched the Scotties Tournament of Hearts on TV. That’s our nation’s annual Women’s Curling Championships. You’ve probably watched curling for years, even if you’re not a curler. If you’ve never been in a curling rink, the game may look interesting and perhaps even easy on TV. In reality, curling is a game requiring touch, feel and attention to physical and mental acuity. Actually, it’s a team game of good, healthy exercise. Everyone, young and old, can play the game. We’ll even provide you a stick to slide your rock with if flexibility is a challenge.
That’s right, if you’d like to try sliding a curling rock yourself, this Saturday, Feb. 25 is your opportunity. Saturday is National Curling Day in Canada. The Gibsons Curling Club is open and welcomes you to come on in and see and try our game, free of charge. From 10 a.m. to noon, you can try the game yourself. We’ll supply all the equipment you need, and we’ll even have qualified instructors to teach and help you as you slide your first curling rock about 28 meters down the ice to those familiar circles you’ve seen for years on the TV. Those circles are known as “the house” in curling terms.
Bring a friend, come and try curling at no cost whatsoever, and at the very least you’ll appreciate the impressive skill of those elite curlers you’ll be seeing on TV for the next month or so. And who knows, maybe you’ll find a new and fun activity for next winter as a new curling season begins.
