The history of brewing and witchy rumours

Before history, we wandered, following pre-domesticated cattle and gathering large grain grasses.
Halloween witch

Before history, we wandered, following pre-domesticated cattle and gathering large grain grasses. We stored the excess for the next time we passed that way, but the grain got wet, then fermented, and beer was discovered, triggering agriculture, civilization and late-night conversations about silly and weird things. Jump forward 10,000 years to the Roberts Creek Legion and the beer is still there and the brewer is on stage with your local blacksmith, rocking the house (not even the main event). Next Saturday, Nov. 6, along with DJ Buzy B, is the world premiere of R&R power duo, Blacksmith & Brewer! Chris Booth (guitar, vocals and brewer at 101) and yours truly, Kelly Backs (drums and blacksmith at Tree Studios), will warm the stage for headliners the Imperial, a stellar group of musos from town (self-described as murder disco). I witnessed this outfit once and have been jonesing for them since. Book your table at rclegionevents.com. Be there or we ain’t friends no more. If you read this on the Friday it’s published, you may be able to get a ticket for GDBC tonight, 28 seats remaining as of this writing, email [email protected] or call 604-886-9813 for reservations. Tomorrow’s show has been sold out for weeks.

I was a Scout for five years, so I am glad to share that Scouting is alive and well on the Sunshine Coast. The 6th Roberts Creek Scout Group meet weekly at Camp Byng (in the West Meadow) and enjoy the outdoors to the fullest, whether a beach cleanup, pitching a tent, biking, knot tying or just getting out of Mom and Dad’s hair, you will be glad you did. The age groups for these co-ed programs are Beaver Scouts (5-7), Cub Scouts (8-10), Sea Scouts (11-14) and Venturer Sea Scouts (15-17). More details at myscouts.ca or phone the Roberts Creek commissioner at 604-885-2282.

Someone should set up a tent (and a cash bar?) at Mossy Rock and Hawthorn for parents of the ghouls and goblins on Sunday night, just sayin’. Mossy Rock isn’t the only game in town though. EEK the Creek is on at the Community Hall from noon to 4. Get your scariest costumes on for this free family outdoor event, with music, games, face painting, and lots of candy! I will be dressed as Kevin Kennelly!

Roberts Creek’s premier Yoko Ono Tribute Band performed Saturday to a sold-out show, but there are more to come! Stay tuned for upcoming shows as tickets will go quickly. You will soon be able to wear your love of the Ono in the form of T-shirts, hoodies, sweats and more. Merch available soon though the YOTB website.

There are rumours of a Witchy Float coming Sunday the 31st to Henderson Beach. Weather and waves permitting, our local upstanding standup paddleboarding womyn will show their seasonal pride – from noon on. Bring your SUP and your pointy hat! Wizards welcome too!
