Sunsets for a cause

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week. Looks like the temperatures have been in the double digits during the day but have gone below zero on some clear nights so don’t put away your warm clothes just yet.

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week. Looks like the temperatures have been in the double digits during the day but have gone below zero on some clear nights so don’t put away your warm clothes just yet.

We love this time of year when the birds begin their morning song earlier and the Robins are the last call we hear as the sun goes down, but the tree frogs are the most entertaining. Our neighbours have a pond and every year around this time, the frogs begin their nightly chorus.

Some nights, their calls are surprisingly loud, and we’ve stood mesmerized listening to them. These little frogs produce several call types. The males’ advertisement call, commonly described as “ribbit” or “crek-e,” with the latter being quite loud, can be heard from very far away. They also have a dry land call which is a long “cre-ee-ee-eek” and this can be heard any time of the year except during cold or dry periods.

Tree frogs are difficult to see during the day as they tend to hide under rotten logs, rocks, long grasses and leaves. They can change colour from brown to green as well as lighter or darker shades. We’ve only seen the bright green ones.

It is amazing how these tiny little creatures can make such a loud noise, singing out to the world to find their mate. Sing on little froggies, sing on!

Painted Skies Over Halfmoon Bay, BC is a hardcover professionally printed coffee table book capturing the essence of incredible sunsets taken by Halfmoon Bay residents. It’s published by Lisa Johnson-Stott and produced and designed by Gil Binne, who are also residents.

Lisa shared some of her history and how the idea of the book came to be. Lisa said, “When I arrived in Canada from the UK some 23 years ago, I was headed for Whistler where I owned and operated a successful eight-bedroom inn for 12 years. In the same year, (1997) some friends who were raving about the beauty of the Sunshine Coast brought me over for a day trip - I was hooked!”

Shortly after, Lisa purchased her first property on the Coast. “We found our haven in Halfmoon Bay and met wonderful people that have welcomed us into the Community. Like many locals, we see Coopers Green Park as a meeting place and an integral part of our community,” she said.

While sitting around the firepit at the park one evening, the sky was ablaze with incredible colours. This is when the book idea came to mind. Lisa wanted to create something that captures the sunsets from different vantage points from the Bay and along the coast to Secret Cove.

Lisa said that her neighbour Gil Binne helped with his “creative genius” and they worked for five months together on this project. Hundreds of photos were received from locals and it was a challenge to narrow it down as they were all beautiful.

The cost of the book is only $50, with all profits going toward ongoing fundraising for the new Coopers Green Hall. To order your book(s), send an email to [email protected].

Payment and book distribution instructions will be sent to you upon receipt of your order. As this is a limited edition, it is suggested to order as soon as possible.

Lisa sends “many thanks to everyone who contributed their photos and to all who appreciate the magnificent display of colour that are part of our Halfmoon Bay skies!”
