Spring cleaning in Roberts Creek is an annual event that begins in late February and runs through to about Valentine’s Day. On Saturday, May 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., it’s Sunshine Coast Streamkeepers time again! Help with the removal of invasive plants every last Saturday of the month, this time at the Lower Road bridge over Roberts Creek, west of the Legion, 3064 Lower Rd. More news you need to know: Streamkeeper Dorothy will be taking the summer off to supply our Wednesday market with fudge and dog cookies, so new blood is always welcome (figuratively, please wear gloves to avoid the literal blood). Contact them for more info at [email protected].
I received an email from a reader in the process of lightening their load and asked where they could unload their recyclable bottles and cans. In these tough times our local Scout troupe (6th Roberts Creek Scouts, out of Camp Byng) have lost many of their traditional fundraising events, leaving the deposit on returnables as their main source for cash in hand. They will come to your door and take the clean drink containers away. Email [email protected] or call Elliot at 604-885-2282.
Pesky teenagers, it seems only yesterday that a wise man said, “They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders, they contradict their parents and tyrannize their teachers.” Oh right, that was Socrates, 2,400 years ago! I have written about the elementary school and our precious youngsters on a few occasions but I want to say that when they hit Elphinstone or Chat, they don’t suddenly lose their value. Our young men and women are going through a time of personal and societal exploration and will need our compassion and support more than ever to traverse the path to maturity. Coming down hard on them for the mistakes they will invariably make (I’ve made them, you have too, in case you’ve forgotten) will do little to guide them into adulthood and even less to signal to them that they are welcome and needed members of our society. The size of our community makes for friendships across generations (having so few people encourages that). As a Creeker, I have the great privilege of knowing folks from four to 94 and my life is richer for it.
With the improved weather comes opportunities for events that not long ago, in the before times, were as easy to pull off as falling off a well-practised log. A tight-knit bubble of local rock legends that go by the name “Captain Fantasy” have honed their aural craft in an alternative band known as WEEN. The Captain is not a cover band, but a tribute band (playing only the music of one artist) and have been making zealous fans out of folks from here to Ucluelet for several years now. Catch them while you can, Monday, May 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. for the livestream via facebook.com/Captain-Fantasy. It promises to be brown.
