Hi everyone! Welcome to October! Hope you all had a wonderful week and stayed dry during all the rain we’ve had. Hard to believe that only two weeks ago we were in Stage 4 water restrictions and we were trying to find creative ways to still keep our gardens growing. At the time of writing this column, Environment Canada statistics for this area noted that 64 mm of precipitation was measured in the entire month of September in 2020 with only nine days of measurable rain. Whereas this September, 112.7 mm has been recorded with 15 days of measurable precipitation so far. This month has definitely felt cooler, wetter and more like fall than last year. On the bright side, there are some sunny days in the forecast and temperatures steady around normal.

Sending out a huge thank-you to Kim Howcroft for filling in for me while I was away for a few weeks. She did an amazing job writing the Halfmoon Happenings column and keeping us all entertained and informed. Hope you all enjoyed her stories as much as I did.

Moira Sarling from the Sunshine Coast Health Care Auxiliary (SCHA) – Halfmoon Bay Branch advised that they are meeting at Coopers Green Hall on Monday, Oct. 4 at 9:30 a.m. instead of their usual second Monday of the month. This is due to the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday, Oct. 11. Members and guests are required to wear their mask and provide proof of double vaccination. Moira also said, “We are planning a special opening of the Thrift Store in Sechelt on Sunday, Oct. 17 as a fundraiser for the Halfmoon Bay Branch.” More details to be provided closer to the date.

The auxiliary currently has five branches along the Sunshine Coast. They have regular meetings, arrange their own fundraising activities, run the Sechelt (shíshálh) Hospital Gift Shop and the Loan Cupboard as well as the Thrift Store. They also provide care and equipment for Totem Lodge and Shorncliffe. The Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary Society is a significant contributor to the quality of health care on the Sunshine Coast. “There is much to be proud of as we acknowledge our history and continue to celebrate our ongoing success.” Thank you to all the volunteers who work tirelessly to help in our communities and provide care for those in need.

The Halfmoon Bay Community School continues to receive donations for their Tom the Turkey contest next week. Organizers of the contest are hoping to purchase 10 turkeys for this special community school event, so it is suggested to make your donation as soon as possible. The contest winners will receive their turkeys on Friday, Oct. 8. Contact Wendy at wwhite@sd46.bc.ca for details on how to donate. Donations can be sent via eTransfer to halfmoonbay_elementary@g46.ca. The school, staff and students thank you for your generous donations!

If you have any ideas for column content or have a community event or story you would like to share, please send ideas and suggestions to cindy.kisser@telus.net.
