Slow Sundays in the Creek

Roberts Creek
slow sundays

For the second consecutive season, Slow Sundays in the Creek will provide a family friendly venue for all to enjoy. Music – Market – More is the motto, and organizers promise to deliver. Slow Sundays are held in the gazebo behind Roberts Creek Library, from noon to 4 p.m.

The Library was built as a centenary project in 1967. The huge rock located at the back corner of the building once had a plaque attached to it commemorating this fact. In the 1980s, a small structure was built behind the Library. This diminutive building was the Women’s Institute Hall, where the local Roberts Creek women of the day would meet.

Flash forward to 2007; the hall has been removed long ago. A few footing excavations have been built for the soon-to-be gazebo, and the archeologist from the Sechelt Nation is there to determine if any native artifacts were dug up or are in the vicinity.

In 2013, an errant match set the gazebo alight, destroying the two artisan picnic tables and deck and scorching the natural cedar posts. After several weeks of seeing the scorched site, Ed Lands volunteered to rebuild the deck. The president of the Roberts Creek Community Association was happy to accept the offer, and numerous Creekers joined in to help – Frank McIlroy and Dave Groom in particular, along with a host of shovellers and encouragers. What was an unfortunate occurrence had a silver lining, namely the community once again came together to solve a problem.

In 2016, Graham Walker’s ukulele group (now known as the BUGs: Beachcombers Ukulele Group) was playing at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt for a Nikki Weber benefit concert. Walker was interested in doing music at the gazebo, and it seemed a perfect fit.

Thus began the first of Slow Sundays in the Creek.

From June 25 through Sept. 10 this year, come enjoy local food, produce and craft vendors. This year, the Market will expand to the park past the gazebo. Seating and games tables will be set up adjacent to vendors’ booths. Slow Sundays’ own Loose Endings, ukulele enthusiasts, will entertain when the open mike is available. You never know who will be playing – it could be you! Sing along or grab a shaker, if you think you can keep the beat.

Roberts Creek Community Library will celebrate their 68th anniversary on June 25 at Slow Sunday. Coffee, cake and tea will be served after 1 p.m., with a special musical offering by clarinet duo Yvonne and Janette from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., followed by Bits of String, Mark, Kia and others. Come join the festivities.
