Kayla Evenson is a member of 858 Skookumchuk Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets (RCAC) here on the Sunshine Coast. She joined the Squadron when she was 12 years old and five years later holds the position of Warrant Officer First Class (WO1) and is the squadron commander for this training year.
As part of her training with the Air Cadets over the past four years, Kayla has been attending Ground School on Monday nights to learn about weather, aircraft and the science of flight. With the help of civilian instructors Mark Evans, Larry Dyke, Eric Scott and cadet instructor Trish Scott, this year she successfully completed the program. This is a big achievement as pilots know, as Ground School is the first step in learning to fly an airplane!
All Kayla’s hard work has paid off, as she has been accepted into the Air Cadets Power Pilot Training Course. In order to obtain this, she had to write a timed ground school test, be interviewed by a strict RCAC review board and go through a rigorous selection process competing against applicants from across Canada! The result is that this summer she will be heading to a RCAC training centre for seven weeks to try and get her private pilot license. This course is one of the many courses available to the Air Cadets during the summer, which are at no cost to families!
We are all very proud of Kayla and give her our best wishes for her progress in her training and future endeavours. The “sky is the limit” for WO1 Kayla Evenson!
