Seedy Saturday will be held March 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Roberts Creek Hall and the adjacent Masonic Lodge.

A celebration of the beginning of spring, the event is sponsored by the One Straw Society but actually predates the formation of One Straw: Robin Wheeler held the first one out of the back of her pickup at Trail Bay Centre a quarter-century ago.

For this year’s event, the first of two free workshops with guest speakers starts at 9:15 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge.

Laura Walker, a designer working with Gaia’s Guild Ecological and Edible Landscaping, will share insights about creating or enhancing forest garden ecosystems that offer an abundance of diverse crops including food, medicine and fertilizers.

Starting at 10 a.m., Rupert Adams, VP of the Salt Spring Seed Sanctuary, will give a presentation entitled Growing for Seed.

The Grandmothers and GrandOthers will have muffins, tea and coffee for sale, with all profits going to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

By 11 a.m. the main event starts in both halls. There will be a farmers’ market and vendors selling seeds, plants, fruit trees, homesteading products, baked goods, and organic chocolates, and Indian food will be available.

There will also be information booths, a seed craft area for all ages, and a booth where kids can get their hands dirty planting seeds. The Seeds Collective table will take seeds for donation or exchange, along with plants and gardening books.

For entrance there is a $2 suggested donation, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Volunteers are needed. Please send an email to [email protected].
