Dr. Ted Krickan, a local family physician with a focused practice in GP-Surgery in addition to Obstetrics and our local ER, is set to represent Canada this July at the World Medical Football Championships (WMFC) in Dublin, Ireland, July 5 to 12. The tournament brings together physician-athletes from around the globe for a week of competitive football and academic exchange through the International Symposium on Medicine and Health in Sport.
Dr. Krickan, who began participating in Team Canada Medical Football events in 2022, brings both athletic and academic enthusiasm to this year’s competition. “It’s a chance to represent Canada with colleagues from across the country, attend a world-class medical conference, and return to where I went to medical school — it’s a special combination,” he said.
Raised playing Dr. Paul Dhillon-level soccer throughout his school years, Dr. Krickan has continued playing recreationally through university, medical school, and now with local leagues on the Sunshine Coast. “It feels great to be getting together with the team again and heading off for another competition — another adventure,” he added.
This year’s event will be especially meaningful for the Sunshine Coast, as two local physicians — Dr. Krickan and Dr. Paul Dhillon, founder of Team Canada Medical Football — will travel together to represent the country. Dr. Dhillon noted, “It’s incredible to be travelling with Ted back to Ireland where we both trained, to represent the country and the profession. It’s so unique that we ended up in the same clinic, trained in Saskatchewan and also Ireland together—and now we’re going back together.”
