Elaine and I were best friends in Calgary 50 years ago.
We were separated by moves – Elaine to eastern Canada, now living in Toronto, myself to the Sunshine Coast, where I remain. Letters petered out but we reconnected in 2012 when Elaine found an old letter I had sent her so many years ago – which pointed to the correct last name spelling.
Elaine discovered I owned a sailboat and I needed assistance so I could learn to sail it. And I discovered Elaine was a sailor who needed a boat to sail on.
Elaine flew into Sechelt Inlet by water plane where we reunited for the first time after 50 years apart. After we re-met each other down on the floatplane wharf, we lunched together on the terrace at the Lighthouse Restaurant.
Over and above the days of sailing together, we went kayaking, took in a movie at our local Raven’s Cry theatre, had porch barbecues, read, took in the Skookumchuck hike and view and toured and showed off our beautiful paradise here. She loved her visit and enjoyed the ferry ride too.
We got along so well and we have spoken of vacationing together in the future. That’s a testament to how well it went the entire time she was here.
