Refugees and renos

Fundraisers

Faced with two challenging projects, the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre is piloting an interesting fundraising concept.

In addition to sponsoring a Syrian refugee family (a doctor, a teacher and three young children who are presently in Jordan), the Centre is planning a remodelling that will add a designated dining room, refit the kitchen and add better office space.

One of the fundraising ideas is the Treasure Chest, a weekly 50/50 draw that has been used successfully in the Maritimes to raise monies for local charities. One stipulation is that all money raised must be spent on the lower Sunshine Coast.

Participants register to get a number, which they then affix to a twoonie before placing it in the Treasure Chest. Gamblers can bet several times, week after week, using the same number. The scheme was piloted at the Seniors Centre over the last two months and is now being introduced to the community. Chests have been placed at Gibsons Building Supplies in Sechelt (GBS) and at the Big Mac store. More are planned for the area. Last week’s winner placed her bet at GBS.
