The 2021 Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Contest is going ahead for the 11th straight year, with every consideration to COVID guidelines.

Last year the organizers were not deterred by the pandemic and report that 306 kits were distributed, an increase of 85 per cent over 2019. This year 325 kits are being readied for distribution; builders will be able to pick up kits after March 12 from businesses in Gibsons, Sechelt and Madeira Park.

Further details will be announced next week in Coast Reporter. Builders can also look to the organization’s Facebook page at Sunshine Coast Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest.

The event is again being organized by Technology FESTIVAL, a relatively new enterprise launched on the Sunshine Coast. Founder of this group and chair of the bridge contest, John Leech, said he is enthused about the coming event.

“Coasters of all ages and especially students in Grades 1-12 are once again invited to try their hand at building a bridge out of popsicle sticks, with a total of $1,500 in cash and other prizes.”

Leech said that he and the organizing team are hoping for a bridge that beats the 2013 Sunshine Coast record of 405 kg (894 lb.) of pressure set by Lisa Murata, a long-time event participant and one of this year’s organizers.

Leech said the organizing group wants to give students and families something fun to do, and at the same time learn a bit about engineering, technology and scientific principles.

“With the bridge contest we hope to generate a greater interest in STEM – science, technology, engineering and math,” said Leech.

The event is being organized with support from Engineers & Geoscientists BC, Sea to Sky Branch and the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC
