As I write this draft, yes with a pen and paper, the power in Madeira Park is out. The circumstance has me reflecting on conservation of, of course, water but also electricity. Lately, the tap water is tasting like an unsavoury combination of dirt and chlorine. I encourage you to sign up for the monthly water usage report through the SCRD. Receiving the first report last summer, I challenged myself to reduce my use. I won! During my fall garden cleanup, I did find a lot of cutlery from reusing my dish water.
Electricity is another challenge. I receive a biweekly report with my bill from BC Hydro. My recent usage for the same period last year was down nine percent.
Climate change accelerates and has daily impact. Conservation is becoming a lost art. Behind where I live is a recent clear cut on private property. Now, there are stacks of flammable debris adjacent to our backyards. A fire hazard to say the least. What about when the rains come? Two houses across the street burned last year. During the atmospheric river there were damaging floods a few blocks away.
