Operation Christmas Child celebrates 30 years

Last year, Sunshine Coast residents packed 722 gift filled shoeboxes for underprivileged children, many whom are in war torn countries, simply by putting school supplies, hygiene items and a few toys into a shoebox.

Last year, Sunshine Coast residents packed 722 gift filled shoeboxes for underprivileged children, many whom are in war torn countries, simply by putting school supplies, hygiene items and a few toys into a shoebox. In just over two weeks hundreds of boxes will leave the Sunshine Coast to begin their journey for their destination. As disasters and war are happening, children are suffering. When a child receives a gift filled shoebox, it grows hope in their hearts that shows they matter. They understand that someone loves them and took the time to find special gifts for them. This may be the be the only gift the child receives. So, plan to pack quality items that will last, and don’t forget to make it fun!

Left speechless: “Helenka, who has been learning to play the flute, couldn’t speak for several minutes after opening her shoebox. With tears in her eyes, she gazed at something in the box and then finally took it out…a flute! “Finally, I have my own and won’t have to borrow from my friend,” she exclaimed.”

If you are interested in participating in this wonderful message of caring from Canada to children in other countries, you can pick up empty red and green boxes at Gibsons Building Supplies (both locations) IGA in Gibsons, Dollar Tree and Dollar Giant, local churches, and the local collection center is Calvary Baptist Church, 711 Park Rd in Gibsons, or you can call local co-ordinator, Martha Schroth at 604-886-8545 if you need boxes or have questions.  Collection week is Nov. 13 to 19.
