It’s to be called a Blast from the Past. That’s because Roberts Creek Creek Daze was first dreamed up 40 years ago by our ever imaginative Creekers. How do we know? An original copy of the Dazely News – Your Complete Daze Guide (10 cents; two for a quarter) with the headline “We Found Happiness at Roberts Creek Daze” was recently unearthed. The Dazely News, eight packed pages of Creek Daze events including the Higgledy Piggledy parade, maps, ads and news was published in 1979, announcing Creek Daze as “our second annual blowout.”
So, today, around the Creek, 40th anniversary ideas are already circulating for the August 2018 Creek Daze. The “Blast” will come from current Creek bands and hopefully Creek bands from decades ago (the search has already begun) and the “Past” from the 40th anniversary Roberts Creek Daze history project – stories, video or audio, recorded or written – highlighting past Creek events or family histories to be featured during Creek Daze. Festivities will take place at the 2018 mandala where musicians will entertain, stories will be read, and Chris Hergesheimer will be master of ceremonies, perhaps in a top hat.
The 2018 Higgledy Piggledy parade will be proudly led by a 40th anniversary banner perhaps created by Roberts Creek Elementary kids. Former and current Creek bands happy to play, long time residents happy to be interviewed (we need those interviews!), families happy to send in their written Creek and family memories from 40 years (or so) ago, and anyone else happy to help, please contact organizers at [email protected]
Roberts Creek Business Promotions (RCBP) is planning a Business Fair at the Hall in September. And there’s more good news, says Lesley Roberts of Eco-Freako and a founding member of the new organization. RCBP has just joined Sunshine Coast Tourism and will partner to promote the Creek. Lesley is also encouraging more Roberts Creek business owners to join the fledgling organization. Membership is $30 per year with $5 going to the Roberts Creek Community Association and the Raise the Roof fund.
“Members don’t have to get involved (other than to give us ideas),” Lesley said. “But the more members we have, the more money we have to make our ideas come true.”
She’s hoping there’s someone out there who will step forward to create a logo for this latest Creek venture. “Also,” she said, “we’d love to see rack cards that will promote Roberts Creek on the ferries and even further to tourist centres in B.C., Alberta and coastal U.S.” More ideas (besides the spiffying up of the Roberts Creek highway sign, now underway) include a big map at the Hall or the Post Office indicating businesses in the Creek and … well, send your ideas, your membership, and your help to [email protected]
