Christmas celebrations are continuing in Roberts Creek. A special tradition is the Christmas Day community potluck dinner at Roberts Creek Hall. “It’s magic,” organizer Debra Shields said. “The magic happens because volunteers just appear. They bring musical instruments, they decorate the hall, they cook and serve the food.”
To join the fun, bring a favourite dish and your own plate and cutlery. Turkey and all the trimmings are provided thanks to the generosity of the Roberts Creek Community Association, Claytons, both IGAs, Canadian Tire, London Drugs, SuperValu, Sharkey’s and many other wonderful folks.
Doors open at 4 p.m. when the music begins. Dinner at 5:30 p.m. A wonderful place to meet neighbours, old and new. For information, contact Debra at 604-741-8669 or Facebook 2017 Christmas in the Creek.
The Roberts Creek Healthcare Auxiliary has had a busy holiday season. Co-chair Jeanie Parker reports that members shopped for gifts and filled stockings for Totem and Shorncliffe residents, co-hosted a Christmas party at Shorncliffe and decorated the hospital tree. Every year the Coast auxiliaries combine to raise approximately $500,000. Their many good works include the Loan Cupboard at the hospital, which lends much needed medical equipment free of charge. To join the RC Auxiliary, please call Jeanie at 604-886-4214 or Marion at 604-886-3163.
This New Year’s Eve the Roberts Creek Legion is hosting two celebrations, one at the RC Hall and the other at the Legion. Legion president Diane McIntosh says the Hall event is family-friendly. Admission is by donation. “Bring finger food, desserts, and whatever you love,” she said. No cover charge, 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Surprise guests and an open stage/jam hosted by the Jeevious Family. To reserve stage time, email [email protected].
The New Year’s celebration at the Legion begins at 9 p.m. Tickets $10; members’ friends $20. Tickets at the Legion in advance only; no door sales. Entertainment by Cronneloctopus (El Pulpo), The Funkdealer, Buzy B, Octivate, and Bridge. Mieke Jay on visuals. Healthy, non-alcoholic beverages also available. Remember to join the Legion, Diane says – 70 years in the heart of the Creek.
And now it’s time to Raise the Roof. The much-loved Roberts Creek Hall, in its 83rd year, is in desperate need of a new roof. The old roof, metal over very old shingles, is failing. Roberts Creek Community Association president Scott Avery says a new metal roof will cost $90,000. A gofundme campaign has begun. All donations, however small, are welcome. To donate, please go to gf.me/u/d2y7qr, mail your donation to Roberts Creek Community Asso-ciation, PO Box 261, Roberts Creek, B.C., VON 2W0 or etransfer to [email protected].

As the year winds down, the Roberts Creek Library volunteers send their heartfelt thanks to Janet Perry whose two-year term as library president ends this month. And to our library kids, don’t forget the big basket of holiday and Christmas books on the kids’ table, waiting to be read.
On the political front, RCCA president Scott Avery says that the boards of Coast community associations, including Roberts Creek, have been meeting frequently in the past while to discuss their growing concern about the linked issues of water, forestry and affordable housing. Scott said the intent of the new coalition is to challenge elected Coast officials at all levels of government to begin offering solutions.
To end this first column, a shout out to all those Robert Creek volunteers. You keep our little patch of paradise exciting and vibrant.
