A beautiful soul taken far too soon
1962-2025
Co-founder of the McLeslie Bee-Hive Estates & Whinery Est 2011
On April 3rd, after 14 years of being a happy family, it broke our hearts to say our sudden farewells to our beloved Doug. He passed away in the arms of the love of his life, his wife Karen, with daughter Sara, son Rory, son-in-law Greg, and beautiful granddaughters Willow, and Sage by his side. He was surrounded by so much love and warmth in his final moments.
Douglas Arthur Leslie was born in Alberta to Earle and Thelma Leslie. He was the second youngest of 9 children, and is survived by siblings Rosella, Vera (Frank), Randy (Alissa), Robin (Jean), and Pat (Denis). He is predeceased by siblings Alfred (Gert), Terry (Roberta) and Gordy (Bert).
Doug joined the Navy in the early 80's and spent 5 years as a stoker (Marine Engineering Mechanic) working in the boiler room, engine room, and as a part of the Minesweeper Squadrom of the HMCS Terra Nova-259. After leaving the Navy Doug worked many different jobs, but his love of the sea always brought him back to working on boats and ships. He even lived aboard one while restoring it.
In 1995 Doug dedicated the rest of the 30 years of his life to BC Ferries. He worked on many vessels, but the Queen of Coquitlam was the one he held closest to his heart. He took such pride in the Coquitlam learning every sound the engine room made, and instinctively knew when something was wrong. He was the go-to guy if anyone had questions or issues.
In 2011, his world brightened up for good when Doug drove Karen home after a ferries social event and never looked back. Together, they truly did live happily ever after for the next 14 years. He made all her fairy tale dreams come true, always made her feel special, and lovingly gave her the title of 'Queen Bee' when the McLeslie Bee Hive Estate & Whinery was created. Our favourite nights of those years together were spent cozied up next to the fire while listening to Doug play guitar, make up silly songs, tell stories, or give us all a random history lesson (in extreme detail) Doug cherished his role as a dad. Though not bound by blood, the love and support he has always shown for his kids knew no limit. He embraced them wholeheartedly, celebrating their achievements and guiding them with kindness through challenging times. Doug was so proud of the people his kids were becoming and always made sure that it was known. His kids Sara (Greg), Rory (Cassandra), Trevor, and Tamara (Brandon), will forever carry his spirit in their hearts.
'Grandpa Poppa Doug' is also survived by his beloved and special beyond words grandchildren Willow, Clover, Allison, and Sage who brought an immense amount of joy into his life. Doug (aka Mr.Bo Jangles, aka Dr Wiserman) was an AMAZING husband, dad, and grandpa but truly a terrible doctor. He was a unique, wonderful, kind, and loving soul that touched so many lives. He taught us to always try to be happy, show kindness to fellow humans, and that its okay to talk to strangers! One of the best memories we all have of Doug is his beautiful, loud, raucous laugh. When Doug laughed, even if you couldn't see him you knew he was around somewhere.
Until we are together again my love, thank you for our family, being our home, our rock, and for loving us all the way that you do. I will forever be your proud loving Baby Girl Leslie xo xo
A celebration of Doug's life will take place on what would have been the first day of his retirement: July 24th, at the Roberts Creek Çommunity Hall from 1:00pm - 3:00pm. If you have any pictures/videos/funny stories or memories, please contact Karen on Facebook before the end of June so we can include them. Doug was at his best in jeans and a funny t-shirt. If you have your own to wear to his celebration, we would love for you to wear it.
