Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week.

Penny Dunford is a Halfmoon Bay resident and local artist. Penny is a landscape architect by profession but has explored other avenues of artistic expression throughout her life with numerous painting and drawing courses. Easing towards retirement, she moved from Edmonton to the Sunshine Coast and continues to develop her art through many workshops and travel art trips, drawing and painting in a variety of mediums, sizes, and styles.

Penny’s creations are on display at the Sunshine Coast Arts Council’s Doris Crowston Gallery in Sechelt. Her exhibition is called Refugees: Lives Behind the News, which is her reaction to the global refugee crisis. All works are inspired by real-life photos spanning several years and the staggering statistics that tell the full story. A variety of styles, colours, sizes and mediums are used for different aspects of the refugee story: the chaos that forces them to leave their homes, the flight to escape, and the waiting in limbo for the return of a normal life. Hope for a more just and equitable world through global action is also part of the exhibition with a 30-piece series combining each of the 30 articles of the 1948 UN Declaration of Human Rights with current photos showing that there is still much work to be done.

The closing reception is on Aug. 15 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. It is an informal drop in to see the show and meet the artist. Penny looks forward to meeting with visitors to the gallery and sharing her story.

The Halfmoon Bay Environmental Society (HBES) is holding its AGM on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Coopers Green Hall. The AGM is open to all Area B residents. Guest speaker Avi Lewis, writer, media personality, and newly elected NDP candidate for our federal riding, will be speaking at 5 p.m. outside the hall. His topic: “Climate Emergency and Pandemic Recovery: We Need a Green New Deal for All.” There will be time to answer questions. At 6:30 p.m. the meeting will move indoors for the business part of the event.

Since furniture has been retired during the pandemic, HBES is asking attendees to bring their own chairs, which will be used both in the hall and on the grounds. In the event of rain, the plan is to move indoors and should COVID regulations become more restrictive at that time, HBES will send a Zoom invitation by email. If you are not an HBES member and would like to attend, please send an email to marybeth@telus.net with subject: Request Invite for Aug. 19.

Be safe, be gentle and always be kind.

Send content suggestions to cindy.kisser@telus.net before 5 p.m. on Mondays.
