Murata's record still stands

Popsicle Stick Bridges

The seventh annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Building event was held April 23 at Sechelt Nation Hall, with 39 bridges entered in the contest.

Entrants construct a bridge using only Popsicle sticks (a maximum of 100) and white glue (in some categories with the addition of dental floss). They then man the lever on a hydraulic machine that measures the pressure the finished bridges can withstand before breaking.

Current record holder is Lisa Murata, whose entry in 2013 held 3,978.2 Newtons (894 pounds) pressure. Murata’s bridge was the strongest again this year at 2,949 N (663 pounds).

Pictured is Sakura Shioir, who came second this year in the Family Traditional category with her father Keiji at 1,345.4 N (303 pounds).
